miketsu design

funky simplicity

Luckily I salvaged this photograph from last semester’s presentation.

Created with Adobe InDesign.

I’m just throwing this in for the lulz (for those who aren’t too accustomed to net lingo, it basically means I’m putting this up for fun).

I had an assignment recently to do a Business Plan and I had to make up a hypothetical company which I named “MS Architects”.

The architecture firm (as I proposed it to be) was a firm that would specialise in housing (particularly public housing) and would strive to use recycled materials where possible and also would specialise in adaptive reuse and stuff like that.

I think this is self explanatory and fits the idea/concept of the hypothetical firm quite well, considering it literally took me about 2 minutes to put together.

Black band at the bottom is not part of the original design. It’s to simply watermark the image to some extent.

Watch this blog in the next few weeks to come! I’ll be posting up my previous 2-3 semesters’ of presentation layouts. I’m scared that if I don’t post it up, I might possibly have no record, because I had a major scare last night. I realised that on my stolen laptop I had an entire semester’s design work. My AutoCAD file and InDesign master file + Sketchup model are all gone forever.

The good thing though, is that I had a copy of my final presentation, which had all of my diagrams, plans, sections and even DETAIL drawings. Imagine if I lost all that for good – I’d be devastated. My printed presentation was also taken away from me to do a quality comparison thing for the Education board and I never went to collect them. So my models are thrown out too. Luckily I think I have a photographic record of it, which is a huge relief. I made I think 3-4 models for that design session, so it’d be devastating if they were lost for good.

But anyway, enough writing – I’ll be posting them up probably in a week’s time :)

I designed myself a logo. It was actually a process of thinking of all the possible things I could do and believe me, it wasn’t easy. I ended up just settling down with a signature I used to do which I sometimes still do today. I hope it just shows a more personalised side of me, as well as the overall look of the logo making a statement about what I can do.

Logo will be coming soon on business cards!

EDIT/ PSST! IN REAL LIFE:

Well, this was just for fun. Not to be taken seriously. Would make an awesome tshirt though lol.

Although this primarily should belong to miketsuarchitecture, I’m going to post it up here as a graphic design layout that I designed.

This was my submission (well, one out of two submissions) for this week’s tutorial choosing. Basically what we had to do was make a graphic layout – it could be 3D or whatever, but it had to include a list of things such as research methodology, interests, readings (scholarship), precedents and just general ideas or interests you have in particular to the project and why you want to be undertaking the elective. My tutor made a note that he liked the graphics, which is why I’m posting this up here. I submitted this for my first preference, by the way, so I got my first preference – so I’m fairly pleased :)

Note on the graphics – they weren’t done randomly to look cool – the entire presentation is actually a diagram of relationships or aspects of the project, which then organise the entire presentation panel. From last semester’s design studio the most valuable thing I learned was to make a presentation with graphics that speak for themselves – so without talking, the layout and presentation can actually explain your intent. I think this is really important in a presentation, and it makes things so much more organised, clearer and succint. Sometimes people try to put in too much into a presentation, so by using this technique, I think it will cut down on the text (higher engagement capacity since everythiing is more or less visual – even if it’s just typography) and more density in it rather than just work and more work.

It wasn’t easy designing this! It took me over 3 days on and off to do this, but I had fun doing it :)

For the second assignment we were assigned into groups and were asked to design a website and talk about an aspect of web theory. We chose the theme colour.

As part of the group work and trying to keep things consistent, I offered to do the website layout and I designed the graphics for it.

Splash page and logo.

Javascript powered pop up website and graphics altered to suit the theme of “colour”.

The artwork credits go to Japanese artist, Kunie Kanbara, and scans were self scanned from my “RESET” artbook. The TV monitor was a stock photo found from the Internet, and I drew the rainbow and made other modifications where appropriate.

In 2008 I undertook BENV1042 which involved the world wide web in relation to communication and information, in particular about portfolios.

This is was my submission for the first assignment, which involved a personal website:

I think I was one of the few who had a not so conventional navigation menu, as you can see on the left hand side. I created the graphics myself.

The two smaller icons in the lower left corner were used in my personal information pages: the left being the “information” icon and the right being the academic record “education” icon. Both were also created by me.

Back in 2006 I was talking to my friend who was on the board of the HKSS  (Hong Kong Student Society). As you may or may not know, HKSS no longer exists as a society/ club at UNSW – the society is called something else now and it’s run by different people.

Anyway, he was talking about an O-week flyer and having a catchy “tag line” for the society, to which I simply replied “think inside the square you live in“. He thought this was a bit quirky at first, but it caught on quickly since it made a lot of sense considering this was a regional based society.

The idea was well received (as was the flyer and the logo) but I only managed to see them at O-week with the logos printed out and stuck on their tshirts :( The flyer never went live because they wanted to cut down on printing costs.

Still though, it was a nifty little concept design, and if I was given the chance to put this design live again, I’d certainly do it!

This is the flyer, scale 1:2, it was designed so that the flyer could be folded down the centre black line and glued so it’d be a card.

Still, it was a fun and quick project :)

A friend of mine, Ron, has been thinking about revamping his photography logo and watermark for some time.

His philosophy is to capture moments that are memorable and happy.

I quickly racked this one up as a conceptual watermark, but I’m pretty sure he’s going to change the name of his photography and the logo will no longer be suitable. But I think it’s still a nice addition to my collection of logo designs :)

Around the end of 2007 I received my first ever commission from my friend to design a website layout for their self operated decor business.

General layout which I designed, along with the colour scheme.

The website looks unfinished largely because I didn’t get the content for it, and because I wasn’t given stock images to play around with. I didn’t want to take images off the Internet due to copyright reasons, so we agreed that the website was half raw for easy maintenance (my friend could update content and format html easily) and it also reduced the cost of the website design considerably.

I designed and created the icons for the website:

Please do NOT take these icons and use them for yourself – these are my designs and I was commissioned for them!

They also requested that their logo be interactive, so I put together a simple gif file that simply changed in shapes to show that there was a variety of carpet shapes available from their catalogue:

PS: Whilst I made the animated GIF, I did not design the logo. The logo was already designed and I worked with their logo design to create this :)

The phldecorplus website is currently offline (it was online for at least 2 years). I’m not 100% sure why it’s offline, but my friend has moved to a different area due to work, so I’m not surprised if that had something to do with it. If the site goes online again, I’ll update this post with the link :)
